John Will
The work of Calgary, AB based artist John Will has always been autobiographical and functioned as a means of experience. An experience, which is largely his personally, not that of the art world around him, but which he successfully draws the engaged and interested viewer into. Although related to the early 80’s development of “bad painting”, Will’s canvases are attractive, impressive works. The figurative elements, which typically distinguish the “bad painting” of the 80’s, in Will’s case are words. Words that are autobiographical, but presented in a tongue-in-cheek manner that touch nerves often dealing with controversial issues that the viewer can relate. Drawn into the almost sensual abstractness of the canvas, the viewer is confronted with scrawled text that seems jarring, but integral to the appeal of the work. Will’s colourful eye catching paintings are sensual and decadent, while being irreverent, amusing and somewhat disturbing.
