Lauri Lynnxe Murphy
Denver, CO artist Lauri Lynnxe Murphy has long been fascinated by the psychological mechanics of how we are able to mentally connect seemingly disparate elements to find meaning. She is especially interested in the human ability to find personal significance in the most random of imagery, injecting this with our own personal histories, memories and interpretations. Murphy uses interchangeable panels that are designed to interact with one another as a series of thoughts, or ideas, that when viewed together create a greater meaning. “Each painting is like a phrase, word, or sentence, or perhaps even a rebus, whose subtext expands beyond its obvious parts.” Each individual work is capable of standing on its own, not dependent on the other work, but like words, it is the relationships between the words that evoke more complex ideas and meaningful communication. Murphy’s paintings employ both figurative and non-objective styles that both document and juxtapose her thoughts over time. Imagery and language meld into a mélange of unusual materials, pop-culture references and art history. The common thread running through Murphy’s work is a riotous sense of colour, a subtle humor and a slightly disturbing, creepy “cuteness.”
